We had to build a huge machine, the Large Hadron Collider, that was capable of giving the Higgs field enough energy to create Higgs bosons from it. Quantum Field Theory (QFT) is the theoretical framework underlying the standard model of particle physics, a theory which unifies all forces of nature other than gravity, and which reproduces to astonishing precision all terrestrial experiments to date not including gravity. This experiment has now actually been carried out over a distance of 10 kilometres and confirmed as correct.
